Handwriting, Letters, and Sounds

This week we launched our Fundations handwriting/phonics program. We have learned the lines - yes, they have special names - The Sky Line, The Plane Line, The Grass Line, and the Worm Line. Children learn the  names of the lines, and the picture symbols for each, to help them correctly form each letter. Our focus is on learning lowercase letters.
Fundations also engages children in learning each letter through name association, picture association and then sound.

For example:
t - Top - /t/
b - Bat - /b/
f - Fun - /f/

I am also integrating motions for each letter sound, connecting the brain and the body to engage the whole child in skill-specific learning. It's super fun too! See an example below by the girls modeling "echoing."

Children are also using a handwriting practice book to practice forming each letter as they are introduced. Please look for more information about our Fundations program coming home in a parent letter soon...
