Authors
So many children were itching to use their bookboxes this week and today was their first chance. We learned that authors tell stories in many ways and readers have a choice of how they want to read their stories. Today we were introduced to two different ways - reading the words and reading the pictures. Students were so excited to set out on their own to try these two types of reading. Later on in the day, we became authors ourselves and told stories through our drawings. Each activity we do throughout the day is gradually introduced and explicitly taught. For example, most all five year olds have used crayons - but in Kindergarten - we learn explicit ways to use, organize, and manage these materials. Models are given of the correct - and incorrect ways of going about using and sharing materials, moving about the classroom in a safe and respectful way with them, and cleaning our spaces upon finishing.
