Read to Self Mini-Lessons

During read to self, students continue to build their stamina.  We have worked uninterrupted for 13 minutes.  Students are learning various strategies to help keep them focused, engaged, and making the best use of their time.  After learning a new reading strategy, students set out to practice this strategy with just right readers.  Many of these just right readers have been introduced through our thematic units (chester, butterflies, apples, and fall) and the books provide key information to help them learn about whatever it be that we are studying.  In the last two weeks, many of the books include the words, "I" and "see." This continuous pattern throughout each book provides the repetition the children need to master these words. The reading strategies taught vary from how to go about navigating through a story, how to read the pictures, how to sit comfortably to build stamina, to specific skills needed to read words.  Today we practiced matching 3 body parts as we read - our eyes, finger, and mouth (voice).  INQUIRE with your child what that means. Have them show you and model what this matching looks and sounds like.
