Last week, students reviewed another component of Daily 5. During our morning literacy block, we use a structure called Daily 5. Daily 5 emphasizes independence while reading and writing. The students have been building their stamina throughout the year and are thoroughly engaged in their reading and writing during this time. You may even hear your child speak about being a "voracious" reading or "voracious" writer. Each of them is so proud of their accomplishments and focus on learning during this time. Each session begins with a whole group mini lesson and then students are given a choice - so far we've reviewed read to self, work on writing, or read to someone. While students are engaged in practicing a strategy taught, I am able to spend more time in small groups teaching specific skills or conferring with children independently.
Last week, students learned about work on writing - a time where students have a chance to free write. Students shared in a reflection last week the things they were writing during this time. I was amazed at the variety of topics chosen. These ranged from informational writing about insects, fairy tale story, songs, poems, weekend fun, friends, and many fictional stories about dragons, fairies, and dogs!
This week, we reviewed what it looks like and sounds like to read to someone. While reading to peers, students work on building fluency. INQUIRE with your child the difference between echo, choral, and shared reading while reading to someone.
