Exploring at Recess

Students have been enjoying a little extra recess during the nice weather - and taking on science learning opportunities on the playground.  From giant leaves to finding insects to chasing butterflies and dissecting flowers, students are extending their learning while engaging in the scientific process.  Students were heard making observations, predictions, and questioning during today's morning recess!

Greeting

Each morning, we continue to greet one another in new and fun ways. Today, students had to multi task while greeting their friends. Try saying, "good morning" at the same time as patting your head and rubbing your belly! Much fun is had during morning meeting as we continue to work as a community during morning meeting.  Lisa Hebert continues to join us for morning meeting. Thank you to Lisa for staying a bit longer this spring to help with projects around the classroom!

Performers

What a great way to practice fluency in reading - reading/singing poetry!  We've been learning a variety of color poems this week and children are really enjoying (and asking) to 'perform' in front of their peers!  Check out these videos of your amazing children!  More to come next week!

Thunderstorms....again!

We cannot win. The weather forecasters are calling for more thunderstorms over the next few days (feeling thankful we had 2 sunny days!).  Therefore, ECO is being postponed again.  I know many of you have been rearranging your schedules to (attempt) to join us for ECO.  Thanks so much for bearing with the storm clouds! Our first priority is the safety of your children!

We will attempt to reschedule for next Tuesday, June 4th from 8:45-11:30.  If you can make it, let us know.  We are also looking for some soil donations for the flower beds. If you can get some for us, let me know!

Thanks for your flexibility!

Maps and Globes

As we continue to learn about ways to reduce, reuse, and recycle, and ways to take care of our home, we are looking closely at where we live, on planet Earth and ways that we can be Earth's friend.  We've been having great conversations about where we live on Earth.  Students are learning the differences between cities, states, countries, continents, and the world.  Through maps, globes, and many read alouds, students are beginning to understand the differences.  Later in the week we will do some writing about where we live in Montpelier.  INQUIRE with your child if they know their address? Their home telephone number?  What other cities are in Vermont besides Montpelier?

Montshire Museum Field Trip

As a culminating celebration of our learning in Kindergarten, and to extend the wonder in each child, we will be visiting the Montshire Museum of Science on Monday, June 17th.  The Montshire Museum is one of the top science museums in the country.  It is located just off I-91 at Exit 13 in Norwich, VT.

At the Montshire Museum, students will explore over 125 indoor and outdoor hands on science exhibits- interactive bubble station, butterfly collection, live trout, topological puzzles, colony of ants, and so much more.   Students will also have an opportunity (weather dependent) to enjoy the water park and walking trails.

Students will arrive at school at 8:00 and depart to the Montshire Museum on busses at 8:30 am.  We will return to school for regular dismissal time.  Students should bring their own lunch and will eat on the lawns of the museum.  Parent volunteers are needed to accompany children while at the museum in small groups, and will need to purchase their own ticket and ride by car.  Student transportation will be provided, however each student will require a donation of $6 to help pay for admission.

End of Year Celebration

I cannot believe the end of the school year is upon us.  It seems like the first day of school was just last month. At the same time, I look at the progress each child has made throughout the year.  They have not only grown a few inches but have also grown academically and socially.  Our classroom community is thriving and I am proud and excited to continue onto first grade with them.

To celebrate the end of our school year, I would like to invite you to an end of the year potluck to be held in Keith and Leah Jones’ backyard on Tuesday, June 11th from 5:00-6:30 (raindate, Thursday, June 13th ).   I hope to enjoy dinner as a larger community and celebrate our year together as a whole.  Because of space, I would encourage that only immediate family join – children are most welcome!

In order to make this successful, I need your help.  I am looking for families to provide food, beverages, plasticware, and help provide chairs and tables.  If you can volunteer to supply a few items and help me organize, please let me know how you can help.  Please return this by Wednesday, May 29th.  This cookout is intended to be family/teacher run and organized so we need your help to make it happen!  All families are encouraged to bring lawn chairs.

I look forward to celebrating with you! If you cannot attend, please let me know how I can help your child participate.  If you have any questions, feel free to email either Leah or myself. (jillc@mpsvt.org/alloy.leah@live.com)

ECO - Wednesday

On Wednesday, we'll have our final ECO day.  As a celebration of the year long program, all kindergarten classes will go out and enjoy a fun day in Harrison Field/Forest.  Five different fun stations will be created for children to cycle through.  If you plan on joining us, please let me know!  Please help your child be prepared for the weather on Wednesday!  We will be back in time for lunch at 11:30.

Bye-Bye, Chicks!

On Monday and Tuesday night, a handful of chicks broke out of their shells and were welcomed by their Kindergarten friends.  This week, students learned about how to care for chicks and what they need in order to survive.  Students enjoyed talking with the chicks and even reading them stories during library time on Friday.  We spent a lot of time observing what the chicks look like and how they are responding to their new environment outside the egg.  On Friday, we said goodbye, and wished them well - a Kindergarten family from Mrs. Dostie's class has brought them home to their chicken farm.

During literacy this week, we continued to journal and learn more about life of a chicken on a farm. We read a range of "Little Red Hen" stories and responded to various prompts.  Children are being encouraged to listen carefully to the question and come up with a resposne that directly answers the question.  They are also learning how to stay on topic while expanding their thoughts with multiple sentences.  Most children are just learning how to include various forms of punctuation and are working on pinpointing when to use a period verse an exclamation point and a question mark. Students also spent some time imagining they were a chicken and thought about what they would say when they first hatched out of the egg.  Kindergartners wrote their thoughts in a speech bubble and created some chicken art.

In math, we continued to work on solving chick number stories and also spent some time creating our own chicken number stories. Next week, we'll solve these number stories in multiple ways.

Cheep Cheep

When I left this evening, this little guy really wanted to make his debut into the world.  Hopefully by tomorrow morning (day 21 on the dot!) we'll welcome a handful of new chicks.  Students observed many chicks this afternoon using their egg tooth to break a hole through the egg. (view blog for video)

Thanks for all your kind words!

Thanks for all the congrats last week!

ECO POSTPONED

Due to the weather forecast on Wednesday, ECO will be postponed.  I will let you know the new date as soon as it is confirmed.  Thanks!

ECO - AGAIN THIS WEDNESDAY!!

We will have our final ECO day on Wednesday, May 22nd.  ALL kindergarten classes will participate in fun activities throughout the morning at Harrison Field.  There will be many groups of children cycling through a variety of fun work stations so if you'd like to help a group or have a great center idea, please let us know if you can attend via email. We are trying to arrange groups ahead of time and stations so it's important we know exactly how many adults we have!

Taking Care of the Earth

This past week, students have been learning how to take care of our Earth.  Throughout this unit we will be learning about Recycling, Reusing, and Reducing and about our place on earth and the reasons for why we would want to take care of it.  Throughout this study, we work with Gwen from the CVWM who will team up to team teach the importance of taking care of the Earth.  We began the week learning about recycling as one way kinders can take care of the earth and that when we recycle it takes away from the trash that gets dumped in the landfill.  No kindergartner wanted the landfill to begin overflowing onto the streets of Montpelier, so each one took a focused attempt to recycle and also reuse materials in our classroom this week.  We have been amazed at how much we already do to recycle and reusing - however, we continue finding more ways in our goal to take care of the earth! INQUIRE with your child the words to the song, "Everyday is Earth Day."

Flash Mob

If anybody has better versions, please email me!  Despite the last minute planning and a limited audience, students pulled of their flash mob with success!  (You must go to the direct blog site to view the dance video!)

Chicken Dance

Even though our concert has long passed, kindergarten students are continuing to get together once a month for a sing-a-long. Today, students did the chicken dance in honor of "Dewey,"  the chick and it's fellow friends (still in the incubator) and our learning of the life cycle and life of chickens.

Last minute decision!

Hello Parents,

This afternoon, students from our buddy class taught us a choreographed dance.   All the children did so well, that the fourth graders decided to invite us to join them in their flash mob planned for tomorrow around 12:30 on the state house lawn.  The fourth graders have created this dance as a fundraiser and an awareness of/for endangered animals, which they have been studying over the last month.  Our students accepted the offer, so if you're "happening to be around the state house during your lunch break" stop to take a look.

I've attempted to explain to the students what a flash mob is - a concept very difficult for them to understand.  Their job was to tell you to come to eat lunch at the state house - but try to be sly about why.  For some of them, even after the explanation, it was difficult for them to internalize what this means.

Because this was decided at 2:15 this afternoon, I was unable to get a notice out, but if you're around, remember to keep your eyes open at the state house.  For those of you whose kids are keeping it a secret, but told you to eat lunch at the state house, please don't tell them I shared this event with you!  I know some are excited to be keeping a secret from their parents!!!

Also, keep in mind that the kinders just learned the dance at 2:00 this afternoon and haven't had a whole lot of time to perfect it!

Improving Harrison Field/Forest

We lucked out with another beautiful weather day for ECO. We beat the rain and had sunshine streaming down on us all morning. The focus of today's lesson was to think about how people and our community use Harrison Field/Forest and what people need to help them use this area. Students explored ways that they could make this area more assessible and user friendly. Children explored the forest journaling ideas on how to improve the park. Ideas ranged from putting in trash cans, making signs, maps and trails, fixing bridges, clearing brush, building play structures made of natural materials, creating an outdoor meeting place, and helping people find their way through the forest and field. In first grade, we plan to take on a few of these projects as a grade! After this exploration and meeting in the forest to share out ideas, students spent time building fairy houses using materials from the forest floor that were already dead and on the ground.

World Wildlife Fund

Students in Wendy's grade four class are doing a fundraiser to raise $ for the World Wildlife Fund.  There will be a craft and bake sale on Friday, May 17th during school hours.  If you'd like your child to purchase something, please send in between $.25 and $1.50 (no more) in a sealed bag or envelope with their name on it.  Thanks for helping to support our buddy class' attempts to help wildlife!

Peep Peep

You may have heard from your child yesterday, but a chick hatched over the weekend. When we went to turn the eggs on Friday afternoon, we noticed a small crack in the egg and then a few hours later, we began hearing a faint, "cheep cheep" and saw an egg tooth appearing!  We were quite surprised and by Saturday morning, we had welcomed our first healthy chick - many days earlier. On Monday, this prompted a conversation about early births and students engaged in the questioning process of why this may have happened when the typical egg hatches after 21 days.  Students met and chatted with this first chick yesterday and in a few days, it will move to a local farm to continue its growth while we await the arrival of the other 2 dozen eggs. As we were turning the eggs today, students began to notice that the eggs were becoming a bit heavier and hope that they too hatch soon.  We continue to journal our observations and questions while reading more about the life cycle of a chick. Our class is adding to a vocabulary chart of interesting words we come across in our reading and adding them to our chart.  INQUIRE with your child what an egg tooth is or what an embryo is!  In math, we are now working on solving number story problems all about chicks! Students are becoming quite efficient in showing their thinking during this process!

E.C.O. REMINDER

We will have ECO tomorrow, Wednesday, May 15th!

Please make sure that your child is prepared with:

  • walking/hiking shoes
  • sunscreen (please apply before school)
  • **water bottle**
  • snack - WE WILL NOT RECEIVE SNACK FROM SCHOOL
  • back pack
  • raincoat (if needed)

Thanks!

Thanks!

Thank you to Steph and her little assistant who graciously spend an hour a week helping me with preparation and organization around the classroom.  I'm so appreciative of her willingness to help me out with various projects around our classroom ranging from cutting and pasting, labeling, and taking down bulletin boards - most activities that are not so fun - but quite time consuming!  Thank you Steph!
