Today we began looking at Gail Gibbons and Jim Arnosky's work. Students noticed how these authors become experts on 1 topic and then write all they know about it. As a follow up to our morning literacy and science focus about spring, students set out to be authors and illustrators just like these two authors. All students practiced writing facts about spring - in particular the different signs of spring that we all hope we will begin to see soon. We discussed what facts were and learned that facts are different than your thoughts. Students thought about spring and the facts that they learned from the nonfiction text we read aloud and also from their own background knowledge. Students wrote about the grass turning green, bears coming out of hibernation, tshirts and capris, warmer temperatures, birds migrating south, and of course, flowers blooming. It was amazing to see all that the children learned and know about the change of seasons. Although difficult for children to understand that despite the chilly temps still outside, we call this time of year spring! Hopefully we'll begin to see some of these facts the children wrote about appear soon!
