Day 2...How tired is your child?

Every morning, students join together for calendar math during number corner.  We have learned a days of the week song and have been using our math hands to show different numbers.  Have your child sing you the days of the week song, and have them show you some of their "math hands."  After number corner, students have been working with a variety of math "tools" or manipulative that will be used throughout the year for a variety of different math games and lessons.  INQUIRE with your child what materials they have used and how they have used them (unifix cubes, pattern blocks, and polydrons).

Snack time in Kindergarten is a great time to meet and talk with new and old friends.  INQUIRE with your child who is sitting at this table for snack today!

Gwen from the Central Vermont Solid Waste came to do a presentation about how to reduce, recycle, and reuse at our school with our class along with Mrs. Bates' class. Gwen explained to us the importance of and how to go about composting and recycling here at UES. Students are working on this in the cafeteria, and we'll start composting tomorrow morning after snack in our classroom. Once we start composting, it will be the students' job to empty the compost every few days and make sure they are looking closely and thinking about where food scraps go, plastic, paper, etc. INQUIRE with your child what they composted, recycled, and threw in the trash today at lunch.  Later in the spring, we'll meet Gwen again and learn about where all our compost goes and enjoy fresh lettuce right in the cafeteria!

Choice time continues to be a time in where children practice social skills and develop their language skills.  Dramatic play is a popular choice for students - today there was a baby doll diagnosed with a virus!  Uh- oh.  Legos, dollhouse, and blocks are a big hit, as is the writing center where the children can craft up a project or draw you a picture!  INQUIRE with your child what choice they made today - what happens if their choice is taken - how do they show "flexibility."
