I hope you had a relaxing and rejuvenating vacation with your families. It’s hard to believe that we have only three and a half months of Kindergarten left. The year has certainly flown by!
During the next few months, we will be very busy. Students will dive right into a Dr. Seuss integrated unit, a Tar Beach writing unit, continue exploring tracks and ways to help Harrison Field, and begin looking closely at nonfiction through reading and writing text about Vermont Animals. In math we will continue developing number sense and apply this through solving picture and word problems about sea creatures and frogs.
Through the Dr. Seuss integrated unit we will read many, many books. Some of his books use simple rhyming words, and are silly. Students will learn to read in a fun way. We will learn what inspired Dr. Seuss to write and illustrate books, and find out what makes his writing so popular among readers. Students will have many opportunities to practice thinking, reading and writing, and doing fun learning activities in response to several of Dr. Seuss’ amazing stories. (Thank you so much for sending in your books...we have plenty now, so no need to send in any more!)
Throughout this unit over the three weeks, we will have many special days. You will want to keep these dates open and put them in your calendar to ensure your child is best prepared to participate with their class in celebrating the work of Dr. Seuss. It will be helpful for you to discuss these days with your child and prepare ahead of time for what they will need to do.
As always, the best way to prepare is by keeping it simple yet fun! It is much appreciated when things are chosen that are not distractible to peers and help to create engagement in routine learning throughout the day.
