Hoots
Impromptu math lessons occur every few weeks or so. As our hoot basket begins overflowing, students begin to get antsy. All children WANT to know....when can we count? It's a team effort when we set out to begin the process. While some peers help others count their groups of 10, others quickly gather as many groups of ten as they can, others anticipate the group of 10 to come, some keep the piles organized, a few count over and over again, and one sneaks off to count how many certificates (groups of 100) we already have. There are many jobs associated with counting hoots and as the basket gets lower, the excitement grows. Once counted, we set out to figure out just how many hoots we have total. Counting, adding, grouping, and many other math skills are being practiced throughout the 20 minutes. Just how do you write, fifteen hundred. But how is that the same as one thousand, five hundred? Differentiation happens naturally and each child's needs are being met. And, all children are learning and practicing different skills. Today, the time before recess looked just like this. We even had two friends write an email to screech letting him know of how many we had earned over the last week or so. 300 hoots in just a couple of weeks. Nice job Kinders! Perhaps Screech will deliver our certificates in person next week! All this work is a result of the C.A.R.E.S. each one of your child shows throughout each day! Thank you for sharing them with me. They're quite impressive, smart, and fun kids!
