Chick How-To's

Last week students finished up how-to stories about chick hatching after doing a whole class interactive writing about the process we followed.  We noticed that the library didn't have any books on this topic, and decided to set out to create one of our own.  This writing, sometimes referred to as procedural writing allows students to practice another form of informational text writing.  I was extremely impressed with the focus and diligence each child had as we came back to this writing each day last week.  Students not only gave the overview, but also added in details to help the reader really understand the process involved.  This week, we are beginning to explore a variety of other topics that would be good to write about - those that we know a lot about and would consider being an expert on the topic and could teach a friend to do it by reading them specific instructions.  Through this writing, students are learning how to use transition words (first, second, next, after, finally, etc) to help make their writing flow.  INQUIRE with your child what topic they have chosen this week to begin writing about.  LOOK for your child's how to book on chick hatching that came home...be proud of your little writers (I know I am)!
