Unit 5 Bridges

We're shifting gears in math, after a great unit on Penguins.  This month, students are immersed in a geometry unit and will be exploring pattern blocks, polydrons and paper quilts.  In this unit, your child will be learning how to describe, identify, and compare 2 and 3-D shapes, will use spatial reasoning to explore relationships among shapes and solve problems, and will also continue to locate points on coordinate grids.

Studying geometry provides ways for students to think and talk about the physical world. The skills students develop now—including the vocabulary that they will come to understand and use with confidence—will help them in high school geometry, trigonometry, physics, and calculus. An additional benefit of studying geometry is that many students with a strong spatial sense—for example, the ability to visualize and move shapes in their minds—blossom when they are engaged in the kind of spatial problem solving featured in this unit.

In addition to exploring three dimensional shapes on our new calendar pieces, students sorted a variety of shapes according to different attributes. INQUIRE with your child what these attributes were.  Students also explored pattern blocks and the concept of what a reflection is. INQUIRE with your child how many rhombus' they saw when they placed it in the corner of 2 mirrors.

Students are still immersed in building their number sense knowledge. Can you believe students are adding two digit numbers? INQUIRE with your child which of these 2 numbers when added together come closer to 50. What strategy did they use to figure out the sum?
